How eager he is to succeed in his dream of winning a Grand Tour, but so far Tom Pidcock has mainly proven himself in mountain biking and the one-day classic races. The young Brit from Q36.5 wants to change that at the Vuelta.
Pidcock is aiming for a strong general classification in Spain. At the very least, he wants to improve on his thirteenth place in the 2023 Tour de France. "My time trial still needs a lot of improvement, but maybe I can aim for a top ten,” he remains realistic in an interview with De Telegraaf.
"Making the podium would be amazing, but winning a Grand Tour is the hardest thing there is for me. I know what it’s like to win a one-day race, but a Grand Tour? Wow, that’s a different story."
It remains one of the major ambitions of the Brit in his still young career, in which mountain biking is increasingly taking a back seat. Pidcock is even skipping the World Championships this season. "It’s frustrating because I would have liked to compete, especially in the battle against Mathieu. But I want to focus more on the road, and our team is still building. So it makes sense that I ride the Vuelta."
Earlier this year, Pidcock also took on the Giro, but he only managed sixteenth place there. Last week he started his Vuelta preparations at the Arctic Race of Norway with a stage win in the third stage.
